Dental Bridges & Crowns
Dental Crowns:
Dental crowns are a type of restorative treatment for teeth. Crowns are tooth-shaped caps or shells that completely cover a tooth providing protection.
Dental crowns are used when someone has decaying or damaged teeth. Theyโre also used to restore shape and color to misshapen or discolored teeth. Crowns also provide support to teeth that are mostly filling.

How Long Does A Dental Bridge Last?
Dental bridges with proper care can last over 15 years. Some patients have reported maintaining their bridge for over 30 years as well.
Is getting a crown painful?
No, the procedure itself is painless because your dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia. After the crown is placed, your tooth may feel a little tender or sensitive for a few days. Minor inflammation around the gum line or inside the tooth is normal and usually fades quickly. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods can help ease discomfort. If pain persists or worsens, contact your dentist.
Can I eat after a crown?
You can eat 1 to 4 hours after the procedure, once the anesthesia starts to wear off. For the first 24โ36 hours, stick to soft foods such as smoothies, scrambled eggs, yogurt, and other gentle options to avoid putting pressure on the treated tooth. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods during this period.
Is it okay to delay getting a crown?
Itโs not recommended to postpone treatment. Waiting can increase the risk of tooth decay, infection, pain, and even tooth loss. Prompt care helps restore the toothโs strength, function, and appearance, protecting your oral health and smile.
Is the dental crown and bridge procedure different?
Yes, the procedures differ in both scope and steps:
Dental Crown Procedure:
- Tooth Preparation: The dentist reshapes the damaged or weakened tooth by removing a portion of enamel to make space for the crown.
- Impression or Digital Scan: An impression or CAD/CAM digital scan is taken to design the crown.
- Temporary Crown (if multi-day procedure): A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready.
- Permanent Crown Placement: The crown is fitted, adjusted for proper bite and comfort, and then cemented onto the tooth. Same-day crowns use CAD/CAM technology to create and place the crown in one visit.
Dental Bridge Procedure:
- Consultation and Assessment: Your dentist examines the teeth, gums, and jaw, often using X-rays or 3D imaging, to confirm that a bridge is suitable.
- Abutment Teeth Preparation: Adjacent teeth (abutments) are reshaped by removing a portion of enamel to allow crowns to fit over them.
- Impression or Digital Scan: Impressions or digital scans are taken to create the bridge, including crowns for abutments and prosthetic teeth (pontics) to fill the gap.
- Temporary Bridge Placement: A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth and maintain tooth alignment while the permanent bridge is made.
- Permanent Bridge Fitting: Once ready, the dentist removes the temporary bridge, fits the permanent bridge, adjusts the bite and alignment, and cements it in place. Multiple visits may be needed to ensure a perfect fit.
Key Difference: While crowns focus on a single tooth, bridges involve multiple teeth and require additional steps to ensure proper support and alignment for replacing missing teeth.
Can I get a filling instead of a crown?
If the damage is minor, a filling may be enough to restore the toothโs function and appearance. However, if the problem is more severe, a crown is usually the better option because it provides greater protection, strength, and long-term durability. Please contact us, we will guide you on the most suitable treatment for your tooth.
How do I prepare for dental crowns and bridges?
Before getting a dental crown or bridge, schedule a consultation with your dentist for a thorough examination and X-rays. Inform your dentist about any medical conditions or medications, and address any decay or infections first. Follow good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing, avoid very hard or sticky foods before your visit, and discuss anesthesia options with your dentist. Arrive on time and follow any pre-procedure instructions to ensure a smooth and comfortable treatment.
Can you eat with a dental bridge?
Yes, you can eat with a dental bridge, but itโs important to allow your gums and teeth time to adjust. Most patients can return to normal eating within a few hours to 24 hours after placement. Initially, stick to soft, nutrient-rich foods like soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt, scrambled eggs, pureed fruits and vegetables, and protein shakes.
If teeth were extracted to support the bridge, avoid chewing in those areas for 6โ8 weeks. For implant-supported bridges, full integration may take 3โ6 months before you can chew normally.
Chewing tips after bridge placement:
- Chew gently and slowly, avoiding direct pressure on the bridge.
- Chew on both sides to distribute force evenly.
- Cut food into smaller pieces.
- Gradually reintroduce harder foods as advised by your dentist.
Following these guidelines helps protect your bridge, support healing, and ensure long-term function and comfort.
How do I clean and take care of a dental bridge or crown?
Proper care is essential to ensure the longevity of your dental bridge or crown. Follow these steps:
- Brush twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss once daily using thin floss or specialized dental floss threaders to clean around and under the bridge.
- Remove stuck food particles with dental picks or water flossers.
- Maintain regular dental visits for professional check-ups and cleanings.
- Avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks that can lead to decay or damage around the crown or bridge.
Consistently following these steps helps protect your dental work, maintain oral health, and prolong the lifespan of your crowns and bridges.
Should you floss a dental bridge or crown?
Yes, both dental bridges and crowns require diligent care, including daily brushing and flossing. Proper flossing prevents plaque and bacteria from accumulating around and under the bridge or crown, protecting your teeth and gums.
Immediately after the procedure, focus on brushing along the gum line and gently threading floss at the base without pulling upward, as this can loosen the crown. From the day after placement, you can floss normally to keep your mouth clean and maintain the longevity of your dental work.

We had the molar extraction today for my husband and it was done easily, professionally, and economically. We were hesitant at first but gave it a go because of their lenient explanation of the procedure. Unlike other dental clinics, they are not arrogant and they are letting you know what would be the pros and cons. That convinced us to do the procedure with them wholeheartedly. Will definitely recommend.
I highly recommend this place. Dr. Hanah also suggested healthy methods to speed up the healing of extracted teeth gaps & crowns after RCT at the most economically viable options.
I have great experience in this clinic !
